There are a lot of noteworthy and infamous photos in the photography world. We’ve peered into the eyes of The Afghan Girl, horrified by The Falling Man, had our hearts broken by Starving Child and Vulture, and was surprised to know that the American sailor kissing a woman on Times Square was out of jubilance but posted issues on consent. The sports world shares the same, if not, may have more iconic photographs because of how popular some sports are. Long-time photographer Stephen Stapinski believes that iconic sports photographs have ways of resonating to us. Here are some of the greatest photographs of all time.

Muhammad Ali’s victory over Liston
Perhaps the most iconic photograph in boxing history, Neil Leifer captured this amazing moment right after Ali puts Sonny Liston down for a round 1 knockout during their title rematch on May 25, 1965. The photo shows Ali in his peak condition and summarizes the boxer’s entire arsenal of strength, dominance, and bravado.

Usain Bolt looking back
Currently the fastest man alive and holder several Olympic track and field records, Usain Bolt shocked the world during his debut at the 2008 Olympics, dominating event after event for three consecutive Olympic events until his retirement. According to Stephen Stapinski, though he had a lot of iconic photos, from him crossing the finish line to his pose, nothing captures his speed more than a photo taken by Cameron Spencer of Usain Bolt looking back at fellow runners. His smile shows that he’s happy with him and the distance he’s put between him and the nearest competitor.

Black power salute
Stephen Stapinski claims that cries for racial equality has been an issue for several decades now. A photograph by John Dominis showcased this idea as he took a photo of Olympic medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos lifting their arms in protest during the playing of the national anthem back in October 16, 1968.
